What Your Score Means
| Speed | Result | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Under 150 WPM | Careful reader | Common with difficult material, a second language, or rereading. |
| 150 to 199 WPM | Steady reader | A little below the adult average. |
| 200 to 299 WPM | Average reader | Where most adults read everyday non-fiction. |
| 300 to 449 WPM | Fast reader | Faster than most adults, if comprehension holds. |
| 450 WPM and up | Very fast reader | Comprehension decides whether this is reading or skimming. |
Why Effective Speed Matters More
Anyone can move their eyes quickly across a page. What counts is how much you understand at that pace. The test reports effective speed, your words per minute multiplied by the share of questions you answered correctly. A reader at 250 WPM with full comprehension beats a reader at 400 WPM who missed two of three questions.
Your speed also changes with the material. Familiar topics and simple stories read faster than technical writing, and most people read a second language noticeably slower. Try all three passages, which mix fiction and non-fiction, for a fuller picture.
Getting an Accurate Result
- Read normally. Racing produces a number you cannot keep up with in real reading.
- Remove distractions. A notification in the middle adds seconds that are not reading time.
- Use a new passage for a retest. Rereading a passage you already know inflates the result.
Once you know your speed, the Reading Time Calculator estimates how long any text will take you, and the guide to average reading speed by age shows how your result compares.
A 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies by Marc Brysbaert found that adults read English silently at about 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 words per minute for fiction.
The test divides the number of words in the passage by the minutes you spent reading, from pressing Start to pressing I'm done. Effective speed multiplies that number by your share of correct answers, so 300 WPM with 2 of 3 correct counts as 200.
Speed without understanding is skimming. The questions check that you took in the main points, and the effective speed score rewards reading that is both fast and accurate.
Yes. 400 WPM is well above the adult average of about 238. If you also answered all three questions correctly, you are a genuinely fast reader.
Most people can improve with regular practice, mainly by reading more and building vocabulary. Claims of reading thousands of words per minute with full comprehension are not supported by research on how the eyes and memory work.
No. The test runs in your browser, and your answers and time are not stored or sent anywhere.
