Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 2026. Your text never leaves your browser.
Overview
How Many Words provides free, browser-based writing tools including a word counter, character counter, text case converter, reading time calculator, and more. We are committed to keeping your data private and your experience free from intrusive tracking.
This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and what choices you have. The short version: we collect almost nothing, and the text you type into our tools never leaves your device.
Your Text Stays in Your Browser
Every tool on How Many Words processes text entirely on your device using client-side JavaScript. Your words, sentences, and paragraphs are never sent to any server, database, or third party.
When you type or paste text into any of our tools, the analysis happens locally in your web browser. No text is stored, logged, transmitted, or accessible to anyone other than you. When you close the tab or navigate away, the text is gone (unless you are using the Online Notepad, which saves to your browser's local storage).
No User Accounts or Sign-Ups
How Many Words does not require accounts, logins, or registrations. We do not collect email addresses, names, phone numbers, or any other personal information. There are no user profiles, no saved preferences on our servers, and no way for us to identify individual visitors through our tools.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors interact with the site at an aggregate level. This helps us improve our tools and identify which features are most useful. Google Analytics collects anonymous data such as:
- Pages visited and time spent on each page
- Approximate geographic region (country or city level, not precise location)
- Device type, browser, and operating system
- Referral source (how you found the site)
No personally identifiable information is collected through analytics. We do not use analytics to track what you type into our tools. Google's privacy policy applies to data collected by Google Analytics: policies.google.com/privacy.
Cookies
How Many Words does not set any first-party cookies. Google Analytics may set cookies to distinguish unique visitors and track sessions. These are standard analytics cookies and do not contain personal information. We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, retargeting scripts, or third-party marketing cookies of any kind.
Third-Party Services
How Many Words relies on the following third-party services to operate:
Local Storage
Our Online Notepad tool uses your browser's localStorage to auto-save your text so you do not lose your work if you accidentally close the tab. This data is stored entirely on your device and is never transmitted to our servers or any third party. You can clear this data at any time through your browser settings or by using the "Clear" button in the Notepad tool.
Children's Privacy
How Many Words does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Since our tools do not collect personal data at all, they are safe for users of all ages to use.
Your Rights (GDPR and CCPA)
Since How Many Words does not collect personal data through its tools, most data subject rights (such as access, deletion, and portability) do not apply to your use of our writing tools. There is simply no personal data to access, delete, or export.
For analytics data collected by Google Analytics, you can opt out by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. California residents and EU/EEA residents may have additional rights regarding analytics data collected by Google, as described in Google's Privacy Policy.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically for any changes.
