How Many Characters Is 1,000 Words? (About 6,320)

Quick Answer

1,000 words is about 6,320 characters with spaces and about 5,310 without spaces. Plain writing with short words comes in lower, around 5,880, and academic writing higher, around 6,740.

We measured 13,148 words of real English prose from our own articles and found an average of 6.32 characters per word including the following space and punctuation, or 5.31 without spaces. At that rate, 1,000 words is about 6,320 characters. Your exact count depends on how long your words are, so use the ranges below when you are close to a limit.

Splitting 1,000 Words Across Messages

At about 6,320 characters, 1,000 words is longer than most single message limits. On Discord it takes four standard messages of 2,000 characters, or two with Nitro. Sent as a text message using only standard GSM-7 characters, it would be split into about 42 SMS segments of 153 characters each. The SMS Character Counter shows the exact segment count and flags characters that force the shorter UCS-2 encoding.

1,000 Words in a Video Description

A YouTube description is limited to 5,000 characters, about 790 words of typical English, so a 1,000-word script or transcript will not fit. Put the summary and links in the description and host the full text elsewhere. The YouTube Character Counter tracks the limit as you edit.

What Counts as a Character

Emoji and some special characters can count as two characters on certain platforms, and characters outside the basic GSM-7 set shorten SMS segments. For plain English text, one letter, space, or punctuation mark is one character. For an exact number, paste your text into the Character Counter; for the word side, use the Word Counter.

How We Measured

We took the body text of twelve of our own English articles, from a wedding speech guide to a thesis guide, removed tables and navigation, and divided the characters by the words. The plainest article averaged 5.88 characters per word with spaces and the most academic 6.74, which is where the style ranges come from. Many estimates, including our older characters-to-words guides, round to 6 characters per word; because our measurement includes punctuation, the figures here are about 5% higher and safer to use against a hard limit.
